Having installed suse 10.1 on my PC, I have noticed that despite my sound card being configured (Intel 82801G, HDA), there is no sound being generated whatsoever. I have checked the sound settings and they are not mute.
Also, if suse does not support this card, are there any other distros that do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How did you test it? Open a terminal and post output of:
/sbin/lsmod
/sbin/lspci
Note, you can redirect output to a file:
/sbin/lsmod > lsmod.txt
