Subject: Kubuntu sound problem...

I have just reinstalled Kubuntu on my laptop, I needed more space and couldn't resize the partition... When I had it installed before there was sound and I didn't have to do anything for it to work. However this time I have no sound, there is a red X through the sound icon down beside the clock. If I run lspci it shows my sound card. And I can use alsamixer and unmute everything, and it sees my sound card. But for some reason kmix is not seeing it. I went into sound and Multimedia in the system settings, but saw nothing there to active the sound card in K. Any help is appreciated.
I have already tried:
dpkg --purge linux-sound-base alsa-base
apt-get install linux-sound-base alsa-base

Output of amixer is:
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such device

lsmod has the following:

snd_ac97_codec 93216 1 snd_intel8x0

Try to start your computer with this option at the boot pompt:

Code:
pci=noacpi

If it works, modify your /boot/grub/menu.lst file to set this option as default.

If it won't solve your problem, please paste the output of this command:

Code:
modprobe snd-intel8x0

I tried modprobe snd-intel8x0 and it did nothing. I even tried it as sudo modprobe snd-intel8x0 but still nothing...

It's good, if you don't get any message. But I don't know if it is good, if you don't get anyithing. Anyway try this command:

Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/alsa restart

 * Setting up ALSA...                                                    [ ok ]
But Kmix still shows no mixers

Look at this how to, if you installed everything.

http://knowledge76.com/index.php/ALSA_1.0.10_Setup_on_Ubuntu_Breezy

You can configure your alsa settings with this command:

Code:
sudo alsaconf

Otherwise, I found on the Ubuntu forum a solution, perhaps it will help you:

Quote
Open volume control (sound icon on panel). In volume control select
file>change device make sure that you have the 'IXP (Alsa Mixer)' selected.

Then go to edit>preferences
check the 'External Amplifier' option then click close.

still in the volume control there should be a new tab called 'switches'--select it.
Uncheck 'External Amplifier'
close the window and check for sound.

As I searched on the internet, found a command, which offer you to configure your mixer setting in console mode.

Code:
dcop kmix Mixer0

Just an example:

Code:
dcop kmix Mixer0 toggleMute 0

I've tried everything listed so far and still no go. the dcop command says object not accessable.
I also tried
http://knowledge76.com/index.php/ALSA_1.0.10_Setup_on_Ubuntu_Breezy but no luck. It seemed to work properly, but in the end I still have nothing in kmix.
Also I do not have alsaconf.
When I do alsamixer and I mute the first option a staticy sound goes away. When I unmute it comes back... This makes me think that alsamixer is working, but that kde is not routing any sounds to it.

I'm sorry, but in that case I don't have any other idea. It was all I could suggest you. Perhaps x86processor or TrickyRic has useful ideas.
