I'm brand new to Linux. I installed Scientific Linux onto my laptop and wrongly partitioned my harddrive and lost windows, the system administrator in my uni says that he's never seen Linux installed so badly. He then installed it for me. However, I selected the wrong screen resolution when installing and I can't change it either on the Display option on the menu, or via xrandr on the shell, as it doesn't list 1024x800 on there, only 800x600 or 640x480.
To avoid looking like an absolute idiot, by going back to my system admin, can I change it myself?

Not sure if you are using XFree86 or Xorg, but the relevant configuration files are /etc/X11/XF86Config and /etc/X11/xorg.conf respectively. There is a modes section in it. But, the resolution will work only if your driver supports it.
