I have been on and off with this problem for the last three years.... since school...
I have an old Compaq Presrio 1810T with a DVD ROM that was built for Windows 98... I know!
It has a 6GB drive, 256Mb of RAM, and a P2 processor. I have been trying to install Linux so as to use to the best of its ability. RedHat was GREAT, but no drivers for the DVD. I tried Mandrake, but other issues such as partioning, became problematic. Can anyone advise an OS from Linux that might help me solve this problem. It has been a while since I have attempted this, so I'm rusty and any help will be greatly appreciated.

thanx in advance

Have you tried Debian Sarge or Slackware?
----
Linux is the kernel. The entire system is called GNU/Linux.

anyway I am curious, what is the part about preparing for rpm transaction about?

just to update,  found out that rpm is a PACKAGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. One of the advantage of using rpm is that it is simple to uninstall program.
