Ok, I was running my own web server under windows with apache and I decided that it was finally time that I quit percrastinating and start using linux. I found a website called linuxvirgins and it was exactly what I was looking for. A quick, easy to follow guide to get me started with linux. To make a long story short I downloaded knoppix, installed it, and tried getting a lamp server running. I ended up deleting my usr directory and had to reinstall linux.
While I'm installing linux for the second time I notice that debian is suppose to have apache preinstalled. So I decide to try and use get-apt to get it to work, but it gave me some errors. So I decided to give installing it myself another shot. I installed apache exactly how http://www.hostlibrary.com/installing_apac...ql_php_on_linux said so. Everything was working fine except when I was done I couldn't connect to http://localhost/. So I searched around on the web and found that apachectl -start will start the server. I type that in and it says apachectl is not a directory. But when I typed ls in it showed apachectl. What am I doing wrong?
Is there an easier way to install lamp on knoppix/debian? I ended up trying to see if it would work if I unistalled knoppix style and installed the debian style. But when I installed the debian style my network wouldn't even work. So maybe apache worked when I installed it, but I couldn't check it because my network wouldn't work. Anyways I decided to uninstall that and reinstall knoppix because atleast I could get on the internet and see whats wrong with that.
I'd appreciate any help anyone has to offer. I really like linux so far, I'm just a little perturbed that I spent a whole day un/installing linux and so far its been all for nothing. Thank you for your time.
edit: I found out about get-apt. I've got my server up and running again. Sorry to bother you.

Always mention the distro version you are using. All recent distros have good package management system that will take care of installing/updating/upgrading software.
