grub won't load my ubuntu or windows
Subject: grub won't load my ubuntu or windows

I left my laptop which is dual boot (xp and ubuntu) it was unplugged when I went out with a friend, came home to a blank screen, which was fine the battery life had died.  However, I left my Ubuntu running; I plugged my laptop back in and was taking to a page that said grub version .97 and prompted me to enter something from there, as opposed to the screen which tells you to pick which os you wish to go into.

I got "lucky" to figure out how to get into my windows because I'm not the most proficient in bash or shell scripting in general.

I used this:

"->rootnoverify (hd0,0)
 ->makeactive
 ->chainloader +1
 -> boot"

I attempted to find my paritions to know which my ext3 was on which held my linux and I think its
(hd0,1)  however, when I try to enter it it says its invalid.

Any help, sorry if its unclear :-(

Thanks!
