What you get is a console. Login and type:
Code:
br /]startx
to start the beautiful X screen.

Ok, your X server is installed, but, it is not configured for your hardware.

Which version of Mandrake are you using? I am assuming its a recent distro that uses Xorg, for the X implementation. If yes, you can use xorgcfg to reconfigure your X setting.

Note down your vendor display specification (horizontal synchronization rate, vertical refresh rate, and buffer memory) before running the above.

Ok i believe when i installed mandrake i did all my hardware configuring there. but i possibly coulda selected the wrong resolution.

im using the new mandrake 10.1 i think, and i found it at distrowatch i believe.

Well after i logged in I typed xorgcfg and then it told me i couldnt do it because its only for root. am i not root because i loggin in with my name. is there a default name to log in under thats root?

Well, then login as root.

If you didn't set a password or you forgot it, then boot into single user/rescue mode (an option seen when grub loads). It will take you to a prompt as root user and you can change the password using:
Code:
br /]passwd
command.

If Mandrake uses sudo, after loggingin as a user, you can try:
Code:
br /]sudo xorgcfg
If it asks for a password, give your user password.

Well it boots up in Lilo and i only have 3 choice to choose from:
1. Linux
2. 2427-0pre21
3. Fail-Safe

those are the only things you can choose from.
i know my password but i dont think im set as root for some odd reason.
i might just have to reinstall linux sad.gif and choose another resolution hopefully the correct one.

For some reason i have bad luck with linux the only one i didnt have bad luck with was ubuntu.
i didnt much care for it. i did like Mandrake alot! tho but im just having a hard time installing it.

In *nix you don't have to re-install to change your resolution smile.gif
