Subject: sound driver issue

Hi, I'm extremely new to linux (I'm using Suse 10.2) and managed first day in to screw up my sound. The sound was working fine except for being in stereo rather than 5.1 so I tried updating my sound card driver (realtek ac'97 nforce3) and afterwards there was no sound  whatsoever. I tried reinstalling the sound device in yast but it gives me the error;

An error occured during the installation of
nforce3 250gb ac'97 audio controller
The kernel module snd-intel8x0 for sound support could not be loaded.
This could be caused by incorrect module parameters, including IO or IRQ parameters.

I have also tried (based on a web search for similar problems) to have alsaconf redetect it but to no avail.
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
