why do things always stop working just as you need them! my servers offline for maintenance as i'm sticking gentoo on it, but given i've only just got xorg installed and configured and its now about 6 hours into a kde compile (i'm using split ebuilds), i've decided to come up to my development box and print out a few of the gentoo doc's for both archive and immediate reference, so as not to have to keep messing about in links.
and behold my printers decided to take the p*ss. using either the cups web interface or the hp-devices dialog, i can quite happily print test pages. but other than that the only software that appears to print ok is kate, which isn't much use when it comes to printing web pages! whats more, kate uses the kde print dialogs just like most other softwares, so in theory if kate works, so should all other softwares using these dialogs... right? well, no. even konqueror won't do it! nor will the hp-print tool, even when launched from the same dialog that prints the test pages without a hitch!
according to the printer log in hp-devices, jobs are being started and completed within a split second, yet the printer isn't even attempting to do anything - as if it never recieves the data.
i've tried printing to file and then printing that file out through hp-print, with no luck.
all configs appear to be as expected. cups shows no errors or odd looking settings, and the printer status appears fine.
any ideas? this one really has got me stumped!
cheers.
for the record i've executed the following and restarted the printer, to no avail.
br /]emerge --sync emerge --update --deep world emerge --depclean revdep-rebuild etc-update env-update source /etc/profile
also for the record, i'm running cups 1.1.23-r7, hplip 0.9.7-r3, and the printer is a hp officejet k550 pro. everythings worked fine until today and i don't remember the last few system updates doing anything worth noting.
[EDIT] must have been a driver bug that cropped in somehow. i eventually gave up trying to resolve this issue, but yesterday a system update included foomatic, and today my printers working fine again. actually i'm not sure whether the foomatic drivers were emerged because of an update or because of my updated use variables, but what the hell its working again now.
