Hi
Currently I am using XP on an Athlon 1.2 prossesor , 40Gb hard drive, 256 sdram approximately 3years old
I have been considering moving away from XP , dont like the principle of activation and licencing issues and fed up trying to fix it I know absolutely nothing about Linux but from what Ive gathered it is far more stable than windows Also from what i've read it seems as if you have to navigate through the system using command prompts and have to write your own drivers etc.
What about my existing software, sounds like it wont run on a linux system I have software like Cakewalk Sonar, Midinotate and Wave studio, what if I want to play any games I have Are there similiar programs available to run on Linux
How user friendly is it , e.g. will my wife be able to use it
Have just spotted Lindows 4.5 is this the distro to go for
How would I install it , I know nothing about partitioning Does it install over windows
Is Linux for me or should I stick with XP

Linux is not always as hard as it sounds. You dont have to write your own drivers. A fair amount of manufacturors do it for you.
You dont have to navigate with command prompts. Installing KDE with Konqueror will have yuo linux distro running and feelin similarly to windows.
I disrecommend Lindows...it's week. For yourself I would recommend either mandrake or suse.
It might take some patience and setup hours but it's worth the move. I've never found anything I couldnt do in linux, if not do better than in windows. There are some great audio programs for Linux. Dont play with them much myself though.
Check out www.freshmeat.net and www.sourceforge.net for lots and lots of free programs.
It wont over install your windows... best way to go is to wipe the whole hard disk and let your linux installer handle the partitions. Otherwaise, there are heaps of 'howto's' that explain how to dual boot linux and windows.
Hope this is of some help...
is linux for you? Depends how willing you are to spend time learning and humble anough to ask lots of questions and always remember... google is your friend. Check out www.google.com/linux for heaps of great help.

Personaly I would Recoment RedHat (currently Fedora). Start out with a dual boot maschine to get the feel of Linux. As far as Software, your right, most of it won't work (except maybe unter WINE) but there are good alternatives that work just as well (or better).

Hi Thanks for your replies Could you tell me please what the main differences are between mandrake, suse and redhat and also what is Wine
Would running a live CD of any of the above be a viable option to give me a feel for the system
Also why do you say Lindows is weak, everything I read about it says its the best option for desktop use, easiest to install and has windows document compatability
All information grately appreciated Thanks

Mandrake is basically built around the redhat architecture but is designed more for the home user. Lots and lots of helpful wizards etc etc. Redhat.. I personally dont like. it's more catered for the server/workstation environment. As for Suse...never used it but I here good things.
Wine is a WINdows Emulator. Allows you (to some degree) to run windows apps in linux.
Running a live cd is a great idea for getting used to the feel of linux... try Knoppix or Gentoo. The above mentioned dont have live cd's that I'm aware of. Knoppix is a great looking live cd which should pick up all your hardware without any problems... but dont play for too long. I would recommend making the plunge asap
I retail linux distros in my computer shop and have played with the windows-wannabe-distros like Lindows, Lycoris and Linux-4-Windows and they are lacking all the better features of linux. Yes they are very easy to install, simply because they make all the decisions for you. You will notice these distros come... and then go. Steer away if you can (Then again, that's just my opinion )
Hope this is helpful

1. WINE Is Not an Emulator! 2. I recommend Suse. I've never used it, but from what I hear it's the most user-friendly distro around.

If you look enough you can find live cds for most distrobutions of Linux. I found live cds for Redhat, Mandrake, Debian, Suse, and Slackware. If you are looking for a live cd try searching on Google. If you have a cd burner, cd burning software, and blank cds you could probably download an iso for free. I think you should just try a few live cds until you find one you like.

Suse + WineX is the way to go Suse is eisier to install IMHO than windows, It also allows both windows and linux to be on one hardrive and it resizes and does this for you automaticly, And it is very simple to use and to install new programs, And it comes with Open Office 1.1 wich is 100% compatable with microsoft office. There are several linux games available at tuxgames including games such as Unreal tournament 2003 and Return to Castle wolfinstien. And with WineX you can play so many good windows games such as Battlefield 1942,Morrowind, Warcraft III, Maxpayne 1/2, Grand theft auto 3/vice city, and many many more very easily! Im sure If you tested Linux and gave it about a month to get used to you would never want to go back, I havent !
