Do you use root password? I think if you use, it isn't enough to write just 'mysql', you need to give the root password (as you tried: 'mysql -u root -p password'). Try to reset the root password, but it's just an idea:

well...
i cant seem to connect to the box from a web app.... so im assuming thats the issue (trying to install MODXcms).... ive added a host thru mysql admin to allow % host....
