Hi everyone,
   I am very new one using Linux so maybe my questions are stupid... laugh.gif   Please help me..  Now I am doing some file transfering in between Linux server and PC Windows NT.
   I have couple questions:
1. How to know I am using wu-ftp or wu-ftp in Linux OS?

2. After trying everything I read from this forum group, I got the following error message when connecting from labtop (Windows NT).  Looks like I have authentication problem?!

Connected to 146.106.185.137 port 21
220 localhost.localdomain FTP server (Version 5.60) ready.
USER tchiou
530 Must perform authentication before identifying USER.
Logon failure, so quitting

  Thank you very much in advance.

Best regards,
Tsann-Bim

From you listing of /etc/xinetd.d/ I am not  sure what ftpserver is actually running.
Can you
cat /etc/xinetd.d/vsftpd;
and
cat /etc/xinetd.d/wu-ftpd;

Thanks a lot.

Here is content of vsftpd
# default: off
# description: The vsftpd FTP server serves FTP connections. It uses \
#   normal, unencrypted usernames and passwords for authentication.
service ftp
{
   disable   = no
   socket_type      = stream
   wait         = no
   user         = root
   server         = /usr/sbin/vsftpd
   nice         = 10
}

For wu-ftpd, here it is:
# default: on
# description: The wu-ftpd FTP server serves FTP connections. It uses \
#   normal, unencrypted usernames and passwords for authentication.
service ftp
{
   disable   = yes
   socket_type      = stream
   wait         = no
   user         = root
   server         = /usr/sbin/in.ftpd
   server_args      = -l -a
   log_on_success      += DURATION
   nice         = 10
}

Really appreciate!!  smile.gif

You are choosing  vsFTPD.

Make sure you stop WU-FTPD ( you can do it in the GUI), then "service xinetd restart".,"service vsftpd restart".

OK you are using vsftp and not wu-ftp.
Remove the comments infront of the pam_service_name line in /etc/vsftpd.conf.
That should do it.

Hi,
  Thank all of you very much.
  I took care of everything you kindly mentioned but I still could not logon to the FTP server.  I tried to logon with anonymous it was successful but not for a regular user of Linux.  The error again was:

=================
530 Must perform authentication before identifying USER.
Logon failure, so quitting
=================

  Maybe I should go for Samba... wacko.gif

Tsann-Bim

I you want to setup Samba you can do that, but don't give up on ftp.  I can get it took work for you.
Post you /etc/pam.d/vsftpd file.  If that file doesn't exist look for a /etc/pam.conf.
This is what my /etc/pam.d/vsftpd file
CODE

auth       required     pam_listfile.so item=user sense=deny file=/etc/vsftpd.ftpusers onerr=succeed
auth       required     pam_stack.so service=system-auth
auth       required     pam_shells.so
account    required     pam_stack.so service=system-auth
session    required     pam_stack.so service=system-auth

Hi g-rod,
   Thank you very much again.  Now my samba goes finely anyway.
   The content of vsftpd in directory /etc/pam.d/ is:

#%PAM-1.0
auth       required   /lib/security/pam_listfile.so item=user sense=deny file=/etc/vsftpd.ftpusers onerr=succeed
auth       required   /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
auth       required   /lib/security/pam_shells.so
account    required   /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
session    required   /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth

   looks very similar to yours...
