I have an old computer that has a 700mhz Duron chip with 512mb memory and 40gb hard drive. It has an onboard lan and a network card.
I just installed Ubuntu Linux on it.
My main computer has Windows XP Pro on it.
I would like to learn Linux and someone told me that I could set up a really secure system by setting up one computer with Linux as a firewall. I mean one much better than Zonealarm.
Is there any easy way to do this? I have no idea how to use Linux at all.
I just downloaded Firefox and I don't even know how to use the tar.gz file that appeared on the desktop
It opened ok to show a long list of files but I don't know which one to click to install Firefox.
Thanks for any advice

Hi,
if you really want to learn Linux, don't start by setting up a dedicated firewall... Sure, it can be easilly done with some distro such as IpCop ( www.ipcop.org ).
But start by learning basic things such as setup a tar.gz ...
You should open a console and extract all the files in a dir, run ./configure ; make ; make install
But you'd better use a packages manager.
I don't really know about Ubuntu but i think it includes something like yum or apt !?
Ask for more help !

Agreed. Learning the basics is an absolute must before you reach out to more complex things like creating the box into a firewall for your home network. Read all you can and play with stuff as much as possible. Don't be afraid to reinstall linux about a million times after screwing things up.. its all part of the process. Try different distro's as well.. till you find one you really like.
