imapd Killed (lost mailbox lock) and other sluggishness

I have Mandrake 9.1 and I'm using IMAP to retrieve my email. I've
noticed that it is very slow and I'm trying to figure out why. I see a
lot of:

Jan 28 19:37:35 earth imapd[26627]: Killed (lost mailbox lock)
user=username host=host [ip address]

listed in my syslog file. What is causing this loss of mailbox locks? I
use Thunderbird on XP to access my email through IMAP. This also happens
with Netscape. I used to have my email on my XP box using Cygwin and an
IMAP daemon there with no sluggishness.

I also have proftp running and noticed that when I try to ftp to my
Linux box (from outside) it takes a very long time to connect and ask
for my password. Anonymous ftp also takes long time. However attempting
to ftp (anonymous or not) from my Mandrake box to itself is quick.
Ftp'ing from my XP box (on my home LAN) to my Mandrake box also takes a
long time.

Where can I look for more info and how can I solve this problem?

Thanks.
