Hello to all.
This is my first post on this forum.

I am an IT contractor mainly MS/Novell experienced supportee. I have recently started looking into moving into systems admin work working with Unix/Linux/Redhat/Solaris as there seems to be good demand for people with these skills. I feel quite excited though and want advice on where to start and on which path to embark without training in the wrong areas etc.

I obviously dont want to spend too much on training but will invest in a Unix type system with linux and redhat and Solaris for practice.

I will really appreciate absolutely any advice and tips at all as to how best to progress and get these systems cheap or indeed free, before I go and spend my money on all the wrong things like a kid in a sweet shop.

Many thanks.

redhat is a distribution of the gnu operating system with a linux kernel, and is thus gnu/linux. ie, redhat and gnu/linux are the same.

solaris is a distribution of the unix operating system and is thus unix. ie unix and solaris are the same.

the best way to learn any system is simply to use it. gnu/linux is free software so grab a gnu/linux distribution and get playing :-). assuming you have a system to at least load a live-eval cd on, it won't cost you a penny.

training however, is corrupt. computer related certification is only useful while selling yourself in an interview. once you actually have the position you apply for, its hands-on experience thats important, and this doesn't come with any course or training material. if you really want to try out a few courses though, then the linux+ and rhce exams are industry recognised.

There is so much demand and very few *knowledgable* people.

That's what you should do - get hands-on experience.

Try the different tutorials at http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/categories.html .

Have fun.

Linux is the kernel. The entire system is called GNU/Linux.
