Hi,
I used the ESC key in KDE pretty extensively in konsole for typing function keys (for example: hitting [ESC] [4] in mc to edit a file or hitting [ESC] [ESC] to exit). After adding entries to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XKeysymDB to get some keys on my multimedia keyboard working, my ESC key only serves as a »normal« key (as for example in Windows). The key works as expected in ttys, so I assume that it's an X configuration issue. I tried undoing my changes, but it did not bring this much beloved functionality.
Can anyone help?
Sven

KDE normally comes with a module for configuring custom key sequences. I'd suggest that you try changing the behavior there. It's pretty customizable. ;-)

Sorry, but... of what are you thinking specifically? I tried khotkeys (in fact I configured muldimedia keys with this module), but I can see no way I can bring back my esc with it. Perhaps I'll just re-emerge xorg.
Darn˛: Now my multimedia keys have also stopped working... :( but that's a different story :/
It's a bad day in history of linux administration.

I was indeed referring to /khotkeys./ I thought you could reprogram your *Escape* key with that to get the behavior you wished for again.
My mistake... :-/

At least, with the source code on just about everything in Gnu/Linux being open - except for the proprietary video drivers etc. - there is always hope... ;-)

Okay, I found a solution and thought that I'd share it with you.
I logged out of KDE, moved every directory and file in my home directory beginning with a dot (.) to a different place and logged on again. You guessed it, I now have a new profile. Copied back the settings that I actually used and everything works like a charm.
I might have even found the problem: there was an (accidentially made) symlink in ~/.kde/Autostart/ to /usr/... this *must* have called for trouble. I probably never would have found that on purpose!
