I lost access to the contents of my /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.7 directory.
Okay, fixed it. For the record, I downloaded the current Knoppix, booted it, had reiserfsck check the partition. It did not report any fs corruption, so I rebooted to gentoo. Sadly, errors on boot and a subsequent check now revealed that I had "permission denied" on everything below /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.7. Willing myself to remain calm, I rebooted into Knoppix, and had reiserfsck rebuild the tree. Problem gone.
My confidence in ReiserFS has taken a hit, though (The problem itself together with the fact that after some googling, this problem turned out to be on the FAQ-pages of a SuSE mailing list. FAQ pages. As in "frequently asked". As in "frequently". Jesus.)
