googles giving me all sorts of answers, so who better to ask than the linux community itself!

to cut a long and expensive story short, i've just been out and got myself a new speaker set - logitech x-530 to be precise (matches ma logitech mouse hehe). just one small prob - i now have a very old 1-channel nforce1 chipset plugged into this nice 5.1 surround sound setup... the result? 5 speakers with sound piping out of... you guessed it... ONE speaker! doh!

the good news is i have a job interview tomorrow, and if i land it i'll be on one hell of a lot more than at current. because of this, i'm not too fussed about spending a little cash (IF indeed i do land the job that is - at the mo i'm only on £5.21 ph, and saving for a new car...).

i've spent the past few hours searching, and pretty much fallen in love with the creative sound blaster audigy 4 pro, god knows what my old compaq motherboards gonna think o' this beast, but what the hell i'm game for a laugh!

so - anyone know how compatible this thing is with gnu/linux? fedora 4 to be more precise. as i say, googles giving me all sorts of answers, but as far as i can tell it seems only sound blaster live cards are supportive at the mo - creative can sod RIGHT off if they think i'm paying them when they don't support my hardware! would rather go for a worse card than give profit to a crap company!

cheers.

hmm, been doing a little more research - seems the only difference between the audigy 2 zs platinum and the audigy 4 pro is that audigy 4 supports a 113dB snr, where 2 zs platinum only supports 108dB - for the sake of 5dB is it really worth the extra £50???

something else i don't understand, is the 2 zs platinum pro appears to be a DOWN grade of the audigy 2 zs platinum! not only does this not make sense in terms of its name, but also in features, as the only difference there appears to be between the 2 is that platinum pro has a much better looking (and far more convenient) external hub in comparison with the internal front bay offered by the platinum. so whats with the £20 price difference? and why the hell does this difference result in the pro edition being the cheaper!?!?

cheers.

I'm not sure, but it's not listed here:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO/s...nd.html#AEN6895

So i guess that means there are no OSS drivers for the card (please correct me if i'm wrong).
But it's listed here:
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/index...ive_Labs#matrix

So it's supported by alsa. I have no idea if it will run you into problems if only also supports, but i don't think so.
If you want to be 100% safe, buy for one that is listed as supported in the first list.

cheers. interesting that in the latter list, audigy 4 support appears to be nothing more than the audigy 2 zs drivers with (i assume) altered tags so as to be identified as the audigy 4 series... maybe this means regardless of whether i buy an audigy 4 or 2 card, i'll essentially get the exact same results/features anyway. in other words, i'd be wasting my cash (at least in the short term) to buy an audigy 4 at £180 when i can get the audigy 2 at £112 (pc worlds web price - yea yea nobody likes giving good money to pc world, but there collect @ store scheme is chuffing great!). question now is which one? audigy 2 zs platinum, or audigy 2 zs platinum pro?

That two cards have the same driver, doesn't say they give equal performance.  The audigy 4 may have better hardware, but it's controlled the same way (by the PC), so it can use the same driver.

I don't know the difference between de normal and the pro version, but the pro version is listed, the normal isn't. So i would go for the pro ....

well this is the page thats confusing me:

http://www.soundblaster.com/products/produ...duct=4915&nav=3

...as it seems the differences between the 3 cards are incredibly minimal, yet the price ranges are so varied. for example, apart from the platinum pro having an external hub and the platinum having an internal bay, the 2 cards are identicle! yet the pro is £20 cheaper!

my email back from creative pointed to a couple of docs i'd already read, and directly stated linux support wasn't covered by there policy, and that "it either works or it doesn't". given there policy doesn't cover linux, it was somewhat of a risk to purchase the pro 4 card or any of those nice new x-fi cards released a few week ago, knowing if it doesn't work i can't return it and get my money back.

with this in mind, i ended up ordering the audigy 2 platinum pro card - which arrived today!

the good news is, my (usually crappy) compaq bios automatically disabled the nvidia chipset and identified this beast (and believe me, its a beast! 2 pci slots are taken up by this thing!!! not to mention the extra psu connection and sound leads for my cd/dvd bays (and optional aux connection for analogue bays, which i havn't used)). anyhoo, after a quick execution of kudzu, linux (2.6.12-1.1398_FC4 to be precise) recognised the card and works a treat with it - i have no less than 40 channels in kmix to play with, and finally i can use my 5.1 surround setup the nvidia chipset simply couldn't work with.

the bad news?

well...

not sure if its related to linux or not...

but...

the hardware doesn't...

urm...

well...

do anything!!!

ANYTHING!!!!

AT ALL!!!

DOH!

the layer of twiddly things on the front of the external hub don't seem to alter anything, even the volume control or mute buttons. the power lights lit up, and given its connected directly to my card, i'd say thats a pretty safe bet everythings configured how it should be. so why don't the controls appear to be working?

similarly, the remote control doesn't do anything either - not sure if this is related to the same as the light doesn't come on to show the hubs recognising a signal from the remote...

all in all it seems i either have a faulty hub, or the hub/remote itself is expecting proprietary software or features of proprietary drivers which i simply don't have. i've tried enabling lirc in the hopes this kicks my remote into life, but to no avail.

any ideas? anyone out there up on how audigy hubs work? do i need software or is this a hardware fault and i need a replacement?

cheers.
