Im using Mandrake 10.
I have about 756MB of ram and 760MB of swap space. The swap space is mounted and shows up as being ok. It can also using swapon and swapoff, be unmounted and mounted.
The problem is that it isnt being used at all and my machine is taking hours to compile programs. Does anyone know whats going on?? Its usage is 100% free.
Thank in advance
Dan

Linux wont use any swap until running programs have used all of the available ram. If there is any ram left over with your programs and data loaded, then linux will use it as a disk cache (it holds previously used data in case it is used again). So in linux you will typically see that ALL your ram is being used and NONE of the swap is being used. If you want to see your swap being used then load lots of programs.

You will probably never see it being used either. There are debates as to whether swap is even worth having with a good amount of memory but i always still have swap part with one gig
