I am having a IBM xSeries 226 with Intel Xeon (x86) 3.0Ghz, 4 GB ECC DDR2 RDIMM, installed with RHEL ES 3 std. I have put in additional RAM to add on to 8 GB.
During the boot up, the BIOS shows 8 GB of RAM. But if i use free command, it shows 4 GB of RAM. I was told to upgrade to RHEL ES 4 64 bits in order to utilize the newly added memory. Is it true? Is there any other alternative?
Thanks in advance.

To use more than 4GB of Ram you need to use 2.6 series (64 bits) of Kernel which comes with RHEL-4
